Mercyhurst student Joseph Coyne visits China landmarks

2011 Jun 28

Joseph Coyne of Avon Lake, OH, was among a group of 20 Mercyhurst College students who experienced China for two weeks this spring under the guidance of Dr. Daliang Wang, assistant professor of world languages and cultures; and Robert Cullen, assistant professor of economics. Coyne is a junior majoring in Business AND Accounting.

The immersion experience was part of a course that included pre-trip classroom instruction on the Erie campus followed by coursework at Shanghai Business School, a Mercyhurst sister school.

Students learned the Chinese language (Mandarin) as well as the business and culture of China. They spent the majority of their time in Shanghai, the country's economic center, where they toured educational and cultural landmarks like the Oriental Pearl Tower, The Bund and Yuyan Garden. They resided on the business school campus and had the opportunity to communicate with many local college students. They also visited factories and various businesses in the region. Another key attraction was Beijing, the capital and cultural center of China, where students explored The Great Wall, Heavenly Temple, Forbidden City and Wangfujing.

This marks the third time Wang has taken a group of Mercyhurst students to his homeland.
